A general X-ray (radiograph) is a noninvasive medical test that helps doctors diagnose and treat medical conditions. Imaging with X-rays uses a very small dose of ionising radiation to produce pictures of the bodies internal structures. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging. X-ray procedures are quick and painless. X-rays are widely used to evaluate fractures, dislocations and other bone abnormalities. X-rays are also invaluable in detecting lung infections, such as pneumonia, and identifying conditions affecting the chest, such as lung cancer or heart disease. Additionally, X-rays can be used to examine the abdomen, looking for signs of digestive issues, kidney stones or foreign objects.

How should I prepare for the examination?
A general X-ray examination requires no special preparation. You may be asked to remove some or all of your clothing and wear a gown during the exam. You may also be asked to remove jewellery, removable dental hardware, spectacles and any other metal object or clothing that might interfere with the X-ray images. Pregnant women will be required to wear a lead apron to shield the abdomen to minimise radiation exposure to the baby if an X-ray is absolutely necessary.
